The 93 year old spy still keeping war secrets
(BBC, International women’s day 2018)
At 19, as a recruit in Churchill’s secret army, Helen Taylor Thompson sent coded messages to agents in France and Germany.
“One mistake and someone’s life could have been in danger”
Now 93, Helen will be coming to Poitou-Charentes in September, and for one night only we are pleased to offer you the chance to come and meet Helen and hear some tales from this remarkable woman’s life.
To this day Helen remains part of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (“The Fanys”) from which she was chosen to be a ”driver” in SOE although her real role was communicating with agents in the field via the BBC.
From her initial recruitment from a secret location in London, through to her post war exploits, Helen’s experiences read like something from a novel and include meetings with The Pope and Princess Diana as well as extraordinary charity activities which continue to this day.
The evening will commence at 8pm and, after an initial interview Helen will take questions from the audience and the session will be followed with informal drinks.
